About me

photo (2)I’m Simon Bowler and I live in Maidenhead, UK. I was born in March 1966, so you can do the maths and figure out how old I am when you are reading this! I am married and have two teenage children, and a big hairy dog. I love to swim(that’s a lie, I don’t like swimming, so let’s just say that I swim), bike, and run. And I like to eat cake. I love cake.

I absolutely did not have a mid life crisis at 40 and take up triathlon.

I had a very non athletic childhood, in fact I was the archetypal fat kid in school. That eventually changed after I left, and I spent time practising karate, gym work, and eventually rowing. Back injury and surgery then led me back to the gym where I lifted weights and suffered swimming for rehab. I had a mountain bike that I enjoyed occasionally, and I didn’t run. I got bored.

At the age of 39, in a last ditch attempt to fight off a slowly expanding waistline, I trained for, and ran my first half marathon. I didn’t die. I bumped into an old friend who suggested I tried triathlon. In 2006 I did my first sprint triathlon, on my mountain bike, and didn’t come last. I caught the bug, hook, line, and sinker. 8 years on and I my love affair with all things tri shows no signs of diminishing. From sprint races through to Ironman, I love it all. I have been fortunate enough to have qualified to race as a GB age group athlete at both European and World Championships at standard distance, and I am a 7 time Ironman finisher. In 2012, at Ironman Frankfurt, I qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Racing there in October of 2012 was a dream come true, but that doesn’t mean I’m done. I just can’t get enough.

Did I mention that I like cake?
