I’m never really happy unless I have some goals booked in for the year, and having taken a break from long distance last year (well, apart from Alpe d’Huez), this year is shaping up nicely. I did put in an entry for Norseman, but unfortunately I was not one of the lucky (?) ones who got their names pulled out of the hat. I did consider Embrunman, but it is quite tricky to get to, and the lure of the Ironman brand was just too strong. So this year’s schedule looks like this:
Tour of Wessex 24th, 25th, 26th May
La Marmotte 1st July
Ironman Mallorca 27th September
And if I can sort my Achilles out early enough:
Bala Middle Distance 8th June
70.3 sometime in August.
Why Mallorca?
Apart from the appeal of the warm weather and beautiful scenery, it is really cheap to get to and stay (£230 all in), and I have a few mates doing it too. But the primary reason is that it is a qualifying race for Kona in 2015. I’m not confident that I will have the ability to grab a slot this year, but if I do, it would give me 13 months to concentrate solely on the Worlds. Doing 2 Ironman races in one year is tough, and getting tougher with every passing year. My long term plan however is to go try to qualify in a couple of years, when I go up into the next age group. In the meantime, I’d better get bloody training.
